Dao Hut • Acupuncture Hobart

What does acupuncture treat?

Although this will be answered exclusively in other blog posts and around the website, we feel it should be addressed in an opening post about a new practice! Despite being around for over 2200 years, acupuncture still has a cloud of mystery that surrounds it. For two millennia acupuncture has been used for pain, injury, stress, internal disorders related to gynaecology, fertility, pregnancy, gastric disorders, breathing patterns, mental health, skin disorders, and so on. In his practice David has spent a significant amount of clinical hours helping thousands of patients with pain related to all kinds of issues: headaches, neck pain, back pain, stomach pain, spinal injury, neurological disorders and more. Acupuncture is approached and based through a completely different medical paradigm and theory, and therefore all patients are properly assessed, diagnosed, and managed through the classical lens of acupuncture traditional Chinese medicine.

At our Hobart acupuncture clinic, we are available to discuss any issue or ailment that you may be curious about how acupuncture can help. David has worked in both Chinese and western hospitals in Australia, the USA, and of course China. He has worked in conjunction with numerous specialists when seeing patients at Royal North Shore Hospital and Royal Rehab Sydney. So you can feel confident when visiting Dao Hut • Acupuncture Hobart that you will be assessed by not only a professional, but with honesty and care. We run a busy practice and have no interest in wasting your time or ours - if we can help we will do out best, if we can’t help we will refer you to someone that hopefully can.

Chinese Herbal Medicine in Hobart

Chinese herbal medicine is an integral part of health and well-being. We offer Chinese herbs for many different and common issues in order to help and reinforce your path to greater health. At Dao Hut • Acupuncture Hobart we source raw and powdered herbs from ethically approved and, where possible, organic sources. All herbs are of the absolute highest quality and are designed to be taken like a hot tea or soup and in the format of a formula. Chinese herbal aren’t for everyone, some people find it difficult to ingest, some people are already on an array of natural or pharmaceutical medicines and may be concerned about herbal interactions. This is why David also heavily focuses on seasonal dietary needs based on the Chinese medical model in addition to unique exercise therapy and breathing techniques in lieu of herbs. Of course, in many cases, acupuncture will be enough and what a patient needs. This is why it is important to discuss what options may be open to you. Herbal medicine is powerful and has been used for longer than acupuncture to treat the most acute and chronic of illnesses throughout time.

Currently, as Dao Hut is being set up, David will often write a subscription or use a delivery service for your herbs. He has many colleagues who run amazing businesses to support patients all over Australia in this way.

What is “Tea Meditation”?

禪茶一味 - or Chan (Zen) and Tea are one. More literally, Chan and Tea share the same taste. This connection between tea and meditative training has been a long standing tradition of East-Asian culture for many thousands of years. It is not until more, recently, that tea, Zen, Dao, and other beliefs have merged as a practice in the west.

There is something very personal, special, and intimate when one sits peacefully with a cup of tea - we connect with time, space, and self. If we are lucky we also disconnect from self and enter into a realm of pure bliss. Tea meditations at Dao Hut are exactly that. Through quietly sitting with rare and fine aged teas, drinking from equally rare and fine ceramics in a setting designed for spiritual alignment we are able to use tea and the rituals that surround it to guide us to a greater state state of self, non-self, oneness, and non-being. We have a concept in Daoism, Ziran or the “self-as-it-is-so”. One could also say it is self-so-ing. This a state of pure authenticity, of universal natural alignment. Tea, breath work, gong or cultivation, are all part of this process. David calls it “meditation training" - which means, like anything, it is a processional experience that brings us to a meditative state. Like going to the gym - you don’t start out fit, you work towards fitness. More on this later - and, with good fortune, by Autumn / Winter 2026 the second room of Dao Hut will be complete, which will be our tea temple for small group meditation training through tea and breath.
